>> LATE 90'S STREET RACING ...Continued

...My best times racing was coming home with a nice grip of dough, Francis Lewis Blvd. was a goldmine for me. I used to hustle that shit like a crack dealer…lol I did my research. I knew who was fast and who wasn't. I would just sit back and watch. Then, when I saw what a certain car could do, I would race them. I used to let off on a lot of races to stay head to head with a certain cat and make them think their shit was fast, then I would ask for a rematch. Second time, I would let them win again. Then, I would act pissed and threw down money for a third run. I used to get them every time. Third time, I would beat them by just a bit so they didn't catch onto the hustle. Sometimes, they went double or nothing after that. That's when the cash would really roll in!

Tell us about the situation with the cops back then.

DEEM: I never had a problem with the cops in hunts point. I lived in the area and when I got caught, I always used the excuse that I'm on my way home. They used to buy it every time. But the cops in queens are fuckin' dicks. They will give you tickets for shit you wouldn't even think is illegal. I guess I got a lot of breaks as well. They saw I was young and shit so they usually let me go with warnings.

Any stories about accidents that you have witnessed as a result of street racing?

DEEM: I saw a lot of sick accidents. You would go to Commerce Ave. and watch the races specifically to see who was gonna crash that weekend. There was a sick turn at the end of the straightaway that people always spun out and crashed on. One time, I saw a car making a u-turn at the end of the track. I guess he didn't see the two cars that were racing and they both smashed into him. One car went airborne and landed back on the wheels. The second one spun into like four parked cars and the third one flipped over a few times. Shit was sick. I dunno if anyone died in that accident.

What trends in Street Racing today would you say rooted in the 90's. (As far as types of cars being ran, mods, etc…)

DEEM: I guess everything came along with progression as time goes on. Street racing definitely opened a lot more eyes on the import-tuning scene. It put a lot of people onto how fast you can make your little import. I think Hollywood killed the sport though. After The Fast and Furious, the shit just got too mainstream and eventually the cops were all over it.

Any final words on the late 90's street racing scene?

DEEM: It was definitely something to do on a boring weekend. It took up a lot of my time and money. Every paycheck was some new upgrade for my car. A lot of pain and sweat went into the sport I love, and I don't regret it one bit. I miss the street races as they were in the 90s, now it's on a rare occasion that you run into someone racing.
